My Next Endeavor!

It seems the frequency between my posts is getting longer and longer. I did, in fact, complete my play therapy classes -- and Bobs and Bits has remained closed even though I finished up a few months ago. I've been at a part-time social work job since last December, in order to complete my classes, have some time for my family and also have some time to devote to opening a private play therapy practice. While I've loved the time I've spent painting, I now know it's time to move on to something more sustainable. It's with a bit of sadness that I say goodbye to Bobs and Bits, but in the spirit of continued entrepreneurship, I introduce Fleurish Play Therapy, LLC. : )

So Many Changes This Year...

Wow, it has been awhile since I've made a post. This year has been in such flux that I've found it difficult to stay current. So, the part-time job (the one I had such high hopes for) didn't work out as anticipated. Let's just say it was a bad fit, through no fault of my own, and I'm really glad I decided to call it quits early on. Some places are crazy bad, not crazy good. I've got something new in the works and I hope it works out a little better. This will be my third part-time job this year (if you count my stint with the Census) and it's been just a little too much change for me. I have a vision for the future, which includes taking some play therapy classes and eventually opening a private practice. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I'm on the right track.

How does this affect Bobs and Bits? Truth is, I'm not sure. I keep opening and closing my poor Etsy shop as I try to deal with all the curve balls. I know that I want to continue it in some form, but know that it will ultimately be more limited than what it was.

So, my plan is to work part-time, take classes part-time and run Bobs and Bits part-time. Wait, don't three part-time gigs equal more than one full-time one? Yes, in fact it does. That's why I'm wishing on a star -- that I survive it all and that it ends up being what I hoped it would be. Oh yeah, there's a four year old in the mix and some continued travel plans in there. : )

Open Again!

Alright, Bobs and Bits is open again. After taking a little time to adjust to my new job outside the home, I have reopened the shop -- albeit it in a new format. My time will be much more limited now, so my plan is to sell mostly items that are already completed (and ready to ship). I do plan to continue selling wall letters and baby birth blocks though. Obviously, these are custom orders. All other custom requests will be considered on a case by case basis and accepted as time (and inclination) permit. We'll see how it goes...

The Dodgers chair is complete!

Wow, this chair has been a challenge. It's not easy to create a design that fits well onto the back of a rocking chair. I think I accomplished it, along with incorporating some elements that were important to the customer. I hope it becomes a family heirloom and gets lots of use!

I have a job offer!

Well, it seems that just as soon as I return from Ireland and re-open my shop, I receive a job offer! I have been planning to switch gears for awhile, but have just been waiting to return from my extended trip to actively start job hunting. In addition to being an artist, I am also a social worker, and while I have enjoyed painting and being a biz owner, I have also missed social work and the rewards that helping others brings. My ultimate goal was to find a part-time social work job that would be meaningful, but would also have some flexibility -- and would help pay the bills too :). It seems that I may have found it -- and I am excited!

These last few years have been an incredible journey. I have had the opportunity to be creative, to learn about running a business and to step away from the hectic life I had before. I felt like I could put my son first, which is the most important thing of all. I do not really know what lies ahead, but I am hopeful that I can combine a social work career with maintaining a scaled back version of my Etsy shop -- and still travel too. And, of course, have time for my family and my son. Tall order? Yes! But I am determined to try. Maybe it is possible to have my cake and eat it too? We will see.

Bobs and Bits Has Re-opened!

I've been gone for awhile! My Etsy shop has been closed for three months while I did some work for the Census and took a month long trip to Ireland. Since opening a few years ago, I've never closed if for this long. It's good to be back!

While some changes are on the horizon -- namely, my searching for employment -- for now, Bobs and Bits will carry on as before. It's my hope to find some additional part-time work so that I can continue painting while still earning money and utilizing my social work degree. Kind of a tall order, but we shall see what the future holds! The long-awaited job search begins now. I still love you, Bobs and Bits!

Off to Ireland!

It seems that my temporary stint with government work will be coming to an end next week. The extra money has been nice, and except for that, I'm happy that it's almost over. It's too hot out there!

Bobs and Bits will remain closed as I prepare for a month long trip to Ireland. Once again, the family will be trekking across the pond to spend some time in idyllic Dublin. When I return, yet another chapter will unfold. What it will be, I'm not sure, but will hopefully involve employment of some type (the type that pays the bills). For now, I'm ready to relax though.

Another example of just completed custom wall letters to coordinate with nursery bedding -- this time in a monogram style. It's often difficult to find artwork, even wall letters, to go with an already chosen style. That's why I make each set to coordinate perfectly. New moms seem to love these!

Time to Move On

After much soul searching and more than an entire year spent in my own little Bobs and Bits world, I've made some important decisions. This past year entailed plenty of painting (which I loved) and plenty of "business stuff" (which I haven't loved). It's been a strange time. I've discovered that it's not possible to make a living doing what I'm doing -- there are just not enough hours in the day. It is possible to do it for pleasure, though, and maybe sell a few things along the way.

A year ago, I would have been distraught to think about going back to work full-time, but I've been working more than full-time here at home. Surprisingly, I'm not upset at all about scaling back Bobs and Bits; I feel strangely liberated. Painting has been therapy for me and this "time off" has been good, but I'm ready to get back to the real world. I miss it. I know there will be challenges along the way (been there, done that), but there will also be some freedom as well -- freedom from constantly working, from constantly thinking and from feeling as if I need to sell, sell, sell to justify it all. I'm ready to get back to being a social worker, to making a living again and to have my time off of work be real time off. What sealed the deal? Doing my taxes. I broke even -- and I worked my tail off doing it. Now, on to the new. We'll see what the future holds and what's out there waiting for me. Now, where are all those job offers? : )

The start of a new year is a time for stepping back, reviewing the past year and making plans for the coming one. It’s been an interesting year. As I’ve continued growing and developing Bobs and Bits, I’ve learned so much. The learning curve has been steep at times, but I do love a challenge – and it’s so much more rewarding to be learning new things for my own business (and pleasure) rather than for someone else’s. That said, I’ve also been thinking about the positive side of working a “regular” job, namely a much higher salary and regular contact with people. This year I will be striving for a better balance between creating, earning money (which is necessary for me) and interacting with people in “real time.”

Ultimately, I’d like to find a part-time social worker job (I do miss it) to fill those gaps, but such a job (a decent one) is difficult to find. For those of you who are able to get yourselves up and dressed, get your kid(s) up and dressed, take them to school/daycare & make it to work on time (every day), without losing your minds, I salute you. I also don’t know how you fit in all the other things (shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc.). As someone who has always needed “alone” time, I can’t imagine how I could make it work without a total meltdown. Been there, done that. I hope I don’t have to do it again until my son is older.

With yet another month-long overseas trip on the horizon (July), I’m unsure about which direction to take. There will not be such a trip in 2011, so I’m contemplating waiting until I return to make major life changes. At that time we will also know if my son will be going to public school, private school or staying another year where he is. This information factors greatly into the economic equation. While Bobs and Bits has been “successful” (i.e. lots of orders), I really can’t work anymore than I already do. It’s been fulfilling to my creative side, but I have been unable to make enough cash to meet our day to day needs -- and I’ve realized that there are not enough hours in the day to do so. Many of you creative types know what I mean. You are never, ever able to charge enough for the time spent.

Anyway, I don’t know what the future holds, for Bobs and Bits, for myself or for my family. All I know is that change, in some form or another, looms ahead. I'm sure that Bobs and Bits will continue on, in some form. For now, it remains the same. The shop will be re-opening on Monday. Happy New Year!

Bobs and Bits is now closed for the holidays, but will re-open on Monday, January 4th. I've had the privelege of making many special gifts for many special children this season. It gives me great pleasure to imagine my creations underneath someone's tree or arriving to someone's home in a big box for them to open. These are the gifts that people remember, the ones that they keep forever as keepsakes. A heartfelt thanks to my customers for their trust (or leap of faith) in their purchases. See you in January!

Holiday Trunk Sale in Mid-City

This trunk show will be a laid back, home-based party atmosphere. From what I understand, most of the other participants are graphic designers. When I first opened Bobs and Bits, I designed a potty chair & coordinating step stool for my son -- to match our vintage tiled bathroom. I entered it in Etsy's Handmade Kids Challenge & placed fifth. I'm not sure why I discontinued it -- maybe I thought it was too design-specific? Anyway, I've changed my mind & decided to offer it for sale once again. This actually has been my favorite design so far.

The single-step step stool will make its debut at Harrison Avenue Marketplace tomorrow! This size is perfect for taller children & can be used as a small bench as well.

Several months back, I found a talented artisan at Apple Valley Woodworks to make these stools for me & I've been using them as the base for my time out stools. This style of stool is so nice -- & the craftsmanship is of such quality -- that it's now being offered as a step stool as well.

Chairish the Children Found a Home for This Potty Chair

My trademark potty chair has found a home -- although I have no idea where! It was auctioned off at the annual Chairish the Children fundraiser for Louisiana Children's Museum. It reached its stated value of $85, then resulted in a tie & a bid-off. In the end, it sold for $110 -- $25 above it's stated value! Yay!

Inspiration in Hurricane Katrina

Today was the Silent Heroes and Hidden Gifts/Share the Moon Katrina anniversary event I have already blogged about. I presented the gift I created to a woman who gave birth to a child in the attic as the flood waters rose around them. She very eloquently told her story & talked about her fears of dying in the hurricane. Her now four year old son stood next to her & I couldn't imagine any more precious affirmation of life. As the water invaded the house, she & her family fled to the attic, in fear for their lives. Not only did they not die, but they brought forth new life into the world -- at a time when something life-affirming was desperately needed. If you'd like, you can read the full story here.

I don't know if she realized how many lives she touched, at the time it happened & also today. I know there is no way possible I could ever have created anything meaningful enough to celebrate the birth of her son. I've attached some photos of my humble attempt at a gift, but I think the gift was much more mine than hers.

This time of year is difficult for New Orleanians as we dredge up our own Katrina traumas -- we all have them. The anniversary reminds of us difficult times & we anxiously watch for activity in the Gulf. It's not easy to put aside the stress & the losses, but tonight I will go to sleep grateful for all that I have, for my own precious son & for all that I did NOT suffer.

Share the Moon - Beyond Katrina

Several months ago, I was asked by my friend Joe Cull, an NOPD chaplain who is organizing a Katrina anniversary event this summer, to create a special gift for a child born in an attic during Katrina. He shared with me that this family had touched him deeply during his time as a first responder during Katrina’s aftermath. Joe explained that he had seen so much tragedy, but that this particular event sparked incredible hope within him. He said that he had gone to the hospital, responding to the shooting of a police officer, when he heard rumblings of a mother and newly born baby about to be transported there. Joe explained that seeing them walk through the doors of the hospital was “life changing.” You can visit Joe’s website to read the entire account of the birth of James Brundy, Jr.

I was blown away by Joe’s request to create something for James, Jr. because I considered it an immense honor. I have struggled to come up with something meaningful to this family, as well as positive and uplifting. After gathering more information about the family, I finally came up with an idea & began work on this gift -- & it’s almost complete. It will be presented at the Share the Moon Katrina anniversary event. Photos will be posted afterwards.

Wall Letter Fun!

I've been getting lots more orders for custom wall letters lately & it's a welcome change of pace. While it might be overwhelming for my customers at times, I love all of the possibilities. There are loads of fonts out there & I have always loved fonts. There's something satisfying about finding just the right one for just the right design. I also love the fact that each order is a custom order so I'm not allowed to get into a rut doing the same thing over & over. Anyway, here's a peak at my latest wall letter endeavor.

It will be auctioned off for the Chairish the Children fundraiser for the Children's Museum in late August (more about that later). It will be on display for White Linen Night at the Children's Museum this Saturday (6:00-9:00). Be there or be square!

I get a lot of requests for custom designs, most of which are easy enough to do. A request for houndstooth wall letters, to match existing bedding, has proved to be my biggest challenge. Take a look at the intricacy of the design & you'll see why. Anyway, I think it turned out awesome & feel like it deserves a blog post all its own. : D

Inspiration from Versailles

As I've mentioned, I'm working on a few items inspired by my recent trip to France. When I visited Versailles, there was one room in particular that really wowed me. It was called The Louis-Philippe Family Room and was done in shades of lemony yellow. This room was essentially a game room for the king & his family, complete with game & embroidery tables & padded chairs & sofas.

I've decided to make a line of chairs (3 in all) reminiscent of various places I visited in France. There will be a Versailles chair, a Giverny chair & a Metro bench. So, how to create a modern version of this gilded Versailles room (& for a child)? I've been searching for the perfect fabric to make a seat cushion with (the seat back will echo the real chairs). Real damask is a little fussy & not practical for a child. Bingo, I think I've found it -- in 100% cotton, machine washable & updated for this century!

Screech -- Versailles project halted! The long awaited gorgeous fabric came in & it wasn't gorgeous at all. Colors were all wrong -- more of a light yellow with mustard (instead of calm, lovely grey). Looks like I'm back to the drawing board, but I found another possibility.

The Market Dilemma

As an artisan, I really struggle with markets. This spring I participated in my first regular market appearances at Harrison Avenue Marketplace. While I think this is the best local market for my products -- & the people running it are really great, I still have my own personal struggles.

1) It's difficult physically. To set up & take down is taxing (especially in the heat). Thank goodness everyone has been so nice in helping me to get my tent up! Loading & unloading the van four times by myself usually results in a migraine or backache.
2) My inventory is fairly low. Because my base products are on the "expensive" side, I can't afford to have loads of them sitting in the basement. They're also really time consuming to make -- & I often don't have the spare time to make things to have on hand for markets. I have anxiety attacks when I don't have enough stuff & the week before a market is typically stressful.
3) I'm an introvert. While I do enjoy meeting people & talking about my stuff, it's also a little stressful for me to actually do it. When you create something, it's quite difficult to "hawk" it to people who may or may not be interested. Salesperson I am not.

That being said, I've signed up for two markets in the fall with Harrison Avenue Marketplace -- September & November. I decided the monthly thing was a bit too much, but I'm still trying to get myself out there. The monkey stool has been created especially for my next market!

I think the illustration says it all! We will be in Paris from May 16th until June 14th. All of Bobs and Bits' shops will be closed until our return. Cowboy Trio is Complete!

Since this is the first coordinating trio of items I've ever done, I thought it deserved a blog post! I think they turned out great. : )

A special thanks to Grandma Gretchen who is giving a very special gift to her grandsons. She provided photos of existing handmade western bedding & I designed the trio to match. Great custom project & very fun to do! I think the kids are going to love it.

Yep, that's right -- for a whole month! This is the third summer in a row we get to spend a month overseas (the last two summers we went to Dublin, Ireland). My husband teaches at a university & has been fortunate enough to have gotten involved with their Study Abroad program.

The wheels in my brain never stop turning, & I'm already thinking of some new things I plan to make when I return. But first -- a much needed break.

Bobs and Bits will be overseas from mid-May to mid-June. If you're contemplating an order, please submit it by May 14th in order to receive it before my departure. I cannot complete custom items before then & have removed them from my shops. Please check back in mid-June for my re-opening.

New Time Out Stool Design!

For awhile now, I've been searching for a new stool design, to be used especially for my time out stools, but also for a small step stool or bench. I've wanted one that is sturdier and more in line with the quality of my other products. After looking high and low (for many months), I found Apple Valley Woodworks, a small one-person shop in Massachussets. When I saw their step stools, a light bulb went off. This is their design below. Cute, huh? Sturdy looking too.

The owner of the shop was not only kind enough to allow me to use his stools to paint, but he even "tweaked" the design to make it smaller and more affordable. He told me he had come up with the design many years ago when trying to come up with a safe design for his grandsons. He even provided me with cork pads to put on the bottoms of the legs (to prevent slipping) and insisted that I use them. This kind of quality is hard to find, in a product -- and in a person too -- but that's why I love and support the Handmade movement. Apple Valley Woodworks also makes toys, clocks, piggy banks (that look like trucks or doll strollers) and custom items too.

When the stools arrived to me, I was so impressed with the craftsmanship, I almost hated to paint them. Anyway, I got over that. Here are a few photos of the first one I've painted in this brand new design.

I've already sold two of these and have had to order more!

I discovered Ogekko's Etsy shop as I was putting together my first treasury for EtsyKids. Despite the fact that I have not yet featured a fellow children's artisan on my blog, I couldn't resist. The clothing line caught my eye because of the unique and stunning fabrics and adorable designs. I truly have seen nothing else like it.

Here is what Georgia (Ogekko owner/designer) -- all the way from Brisbane, Australia -- says about herself:

"I make children's clothes (and some for their mums) inspired by my love of colour and traditional, ethnic and natural fabrics. As I only make very small runs of each design, you can be assured that each garment is quite unusual."

Bobs and Bits' first entirely Green product!

Well, here it is - Bobs and Bits' first entirely Green product. The raw product comes from an environmentally responsible Green company and is Made in the USA. All finishes are non-toxic and Green Seal certified (or recommended).

There were some challenges and using these products is quite different than using conventional products, but practice makes perfect (I hope)! If it means safer products for children and less impact on the environment, I am willing to adapt. : )

Bobs and Bits is going Green!

In an effort to provide the safest, most environmentally conscious products, Bobs and Bits is going Green! All products made on or after February 10, 2009 will utilize latex paints and primers that are Green Seal certified, clear sealer that is Green Seal recommended and acrylic paints that bear the ACMI’s Approved Product (AP) seal of non-toxicity.

Green Seal certified paints and primers meet strict volatile organic compound (VOC) limits to reduce indoor and outdoor air pollution. They do not contain 25 prohibited toxic chemicals including benzene, formaldehyde, phthalates and heavy metals (including lead and mercury). These products are made in the USA. The paint cans may not be made with lead and the labels warn users not to pour paint down the drain and encourage them to recycle or dispose of paint properly.

Green Seal recommended wood finishes (stains and clear sealers) may not contain VOCs exceeding 350 g/L, carcinogens, aromatic solvents, phthalates, heavy metals and their compounds, reproductive toxins or ozone-depleting chemicals.

All acrylic paints are made in the USA, conform to the chronic hazard labeling standard ASTM D4236 and bear the ACMI’s Approved Product (AP) seal. Products bearing the AP seal are certified in a toxicological evaluation by a medical expert to contain no materials in sufficient quantities to be toxic or injurious to humans, including children. In plain English, this means they are lead free.

The majority of Bobs and Bits’ raw products are made in the USA from raw materials (wood) obtained from environmentally responsible suppliers. These products include toy chests, vanities, potty chairs, step stools, wall shelves, peg hooks, doll cradles, rocking chairs, chairs, tables, bookcases and toy organizers. Time out stools and wall letters are also made in the USA.

At this time, only a handful of Bobs and Bits’ raw products are manufactured outside of the USA. These products include photo frames, wooden plaques, jewelry boxes, switchplate covers, wooden blocks and mini wooden letters, all of which are made in China. Artist’s canvas is made in India. When possible, these products will be replaced with equivalents made in the USA.

Whenever possible, Bobs and Bits uses packing insulation that is 100% post consumer recycled and shipping cartons that are 100% post consumer recycled. From time to time, it is necessary to purchase new materials in order to properly package items, however, this practice is kept to a minimum.

I have enjoyed going Green and feeling confident that Bobs and Bits products are not only extremely safe but that their impact on the environment has been minimized. Thanks for supporting the green movement and to better health for all of us.

Stamford, CT February 2, 2009—On Friday, January 30, 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in response to numerous requests by industry organizations including the Handmade Toy Alliance, issued a stay of enforcement of several provisions of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), important provisions which were set to begin on February 10, 2009. This limited stay comes after numerous members of Congress urged the CPSC to quickly resolve unanswered issues and a coalition of 67 business associations, including the Handmade Toy Alliance, requested a delay.

Although the stay provides temporary relief for small businesses for some aspects of the new law, the unintended consequences of the CPSIA will continue to cause severe problems for many. Even with the stay, retailers and manufacturers will still face considerable challenges beginning on February 10, 2009.

“The stay sends a message to Congress that work is still needed on technical amendments to the CPSIA to fix the law,” noted Dan Marshall, founder of the HTA. “I think this is good news. Not because it solves our problems, but because it gives us some breathing room to get our problems solved. Our work is far from done.”

Specifically, Congress needs to take action this week to make the necessary statutory changes to halt the February 10 effective date to give the CPSC sufficient time to complete and issue comprehensive regulations on the many outstanding issues. More importantly, such a delay would give small businesses across the country the time to fully understand and comply with this complicated new product safety law.

"We share the goal of consumer advocates to make sure only safe childrens products are sold.” Cecilia Leibovitz of CraftsburyKids.com said. “Yet we also need clear and consistent rules in place so sellers and makers of children’s products can know how to comply with these important rules. So far, that hasn't happened."

The Handmade Toy Alliance is a grassroots alliance of 289 toy stores, toymakers and children's product manufacturers from across the country, who want to preserve consumer access to unique handmade toys, clothes and children's goods in the USA. Since November of 2008, they have been working to bring awareness to the impact and unintended consequences of the CPSIA on small businesses throughout the country.

“We recognize that the stay does not exempt us from the 600ppm lead limits within the CPSIA” Jill Chuckas, owner of CraftyBaby.com stated. “Nor do we want to be exempted. But it does recognize that all stakeholders need time to work together on common sense amendments and comprehensive guidance to allow our member businesses to keep doing what they love – creating beautiful, unique and safe hand crafted products for children.”
There is no reprieve, however, for small manufacturers who sell to larger retailers or catalogs, most of whom will continue to require full compliance with the CPSIA by February 10. The CPSC still has not clearly defined how manufacturers must comply with the law and many manufacturers are therefore finding it impossible to do so.

And, the stay leaves retailers in limbo. Although manufacturers will not need to prove compliance with 600ppm lead limits, retailers will still be held liable if their merchandise exceeds those limits. And, without testing, retailers will have no way to assure compliance. Also excluded from the stay is a new requirement for children's products to be tested by February 12 for small parts hazards, which will also carry significant compliance costs, especially for small manufacturers.

Members of the Handmade Toy Alliance will be attending the upcoming Toy Fair held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City from February 15 – 18, 2009. Rob Wilson, owner of Challenge & Fun, has devoted a section of his booth (#1249) at the show for the HTA and a CPSIA discussion forum. Members of the HTA will be present to answer and discuss issues related to the CPSIA with industry colleagues and members of the press.

CPSIA Blog-In

NOTE: The following post was not written by me, but by a fellow Etsian. She wrote this piece to be posted by hundreds of bloggers today in an effort to raise awareness to the general public about CPSIA. So, I cannot actually take credit for it -- although I'd like to.

As parents and concerned citizens I’m sure most of us at one time or another have been confronted with the question of lead poisoning. But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They're banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we've seen in decades. I'd like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.

Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.

The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.

How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students:
Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren't originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader:
Due to the new law, all children's books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That’s okay though, there's always television. Our children don’t need to learn the love of reading after all.

To the Lover of All Things Handmade:
Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it's passed testing. It won't even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won’t be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist:
Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can't sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can't even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper:
Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children's items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur:
Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you'll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

To the Antique Toy Collector:
Due to the new law, you'd better start buying now because it's all going to private collection and will no longer be available to purchase. “Because the new rules apply retroactively, toys and clothes already on the shelf will have to be thrown out if they aren't certified as safe.” http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123189645948879745.html

To the American Economy:
Already struggling under an economy that hasn’t been this weak in decades, the American economy will be hit harder with the inevitable loss of jobs and revenues from suppliers, small businesses and consumers. The required testing is far too costly and restrictive for small businesses or individuals to undertake.

To the Worldwide Economy:
Due to this new law, many foreign manufacturers have already pulled out of the US market. You can imagine the impact of this on their businesses.

Raw products part I

WARNING: This is another boring post.

I purchase unfinished products from several suppliers (Little Colorado, Darice, Discount Lettering Brands and Walnut Hollow), much of it raw wood. At this time, it seems that raw wood has been exempted from CPSIA regulations.

Little Colorado, whose products are all Made in the USA, only makes products for children, thus they will issue certificates on all of their products. They are not yet available but I have been informed that they are working as fast as they can to get them out. This is where I purchase the majority of my products.

Darice, who has products manufactured in a variety of countries, state that they will be issuing GCCs on products marketed to children 12 and under, however they have claimed that the products I purchase from them do not fall under that category. All but two of the products I purchase from them are raw wood, therefore are exempt from CPSIA. One of the non-exempt products (an insect box) is raw wood combined with other components, thus I have decided to eliminate it from my own product line. Despite my claim to Darice that an insect box is a children’s toy, they disagree. The other product (a photo frame) is made of raw MDF, glass and other components, however, this product is marketed to adults, not children, thus it will remain in my product line.

I also purchase wall letters from Discount Lettering Brands. They are solid wood, thus exempt from CPSIA regulations. They are Made in the USA. I purchase one product (a stool) from Walnut Hollow. It is also solid wood and Made in the USA.

A few products are purchased from Michael’s and require further investigation. I will post my findings in a separate post.

Architectural coatings

WARNING: This post is about as boring as it gets. The info below is to demonstrate that my products are lead free and to document my good faith efforts to ensure that they are safe for children.

Because paint in general is not marketed to children twelve and under, the products are not mandated to comply with CPSIA, however, I have researched all of the paints I use in my designs and have found them all to be lead free.

Lead was banned in 1977 from being used as an additive to American made paint, with very few exemptions, thus American made paint (except for artists' pigment known as white flake & coatings on the backs of some mirrors) is lead free. Please visit http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml177/77096.html for the CPSC's official announcement.

I use three brands of acrylic paint (DecoArt, Delta and Plaid), commonly found in craft stores. Each of these paints is Made in the USA, conforms to the chronic hazard labeling standard ASTM D4236 and bears the ACMI's Approved Product (AP) seal. Even though they do not fall within the auspices of CPSIA, Valspar has confirmed in writing that all of their "architectural coatings" are lead free. Architectural coatings include paint, primers and other coatings as well. I only use paint and primer from this company. To date, I have not received confirmation from Olympic that their products are lead free. Apparently, if I provide them with batch numbers, they can provide certification, however, this seems to be an inefficient way of doing things and will require me to contact them every time I purchase paint from then, so I have decided to discontinue using their products as of February 9th.

In addition to primer and paint, I also use Minwax water-based clear acrylic sealer to protect my products. I have contacted the manufacturer of this product and have been informed that "batches" of products manufactured on November 11, 2008 and after have certification available via website. I checked the lid of my sealer and it does not have a batch number, so I will check the stores to see if products currently being sold contain this batch number. I will throw my current clear sealer in the trash on February 9th and will purchase a new one that can be certified lead free.

So, that's it for paint. I will post raw product information in a separate post.

Potty Chair (handpainted) CPSIA special -- $5,125.00

Effective Feb. 10, 2009 the CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act) will require that every item made for children under the age of 12 be tested for lead & phthalates. This includes ALL children's products.

CPSIA will require that I test each product in my shop for lead. EACH component (not each item) will cost $70 for lead testing and an additional $350 per component for phthalates testing. Each color paint I use is considered a component and must be tested. This potty chair has a total of 12 components (unfinished potty chair, primer, four colors of paint, clear sealer, magazine rack, toilet paper holder, metal screws, plastic chamber & plastic toilet paper holder insert), which would cost $5040. Total price of potty chair (formerly $85), including testing & price of the actual item is $5125. Of course, if I paint it a solid color (using 1 paint color instead of 4), I could save you $1260 – but it wouldn’t be nearly as cute, would it?

All of the paints I use (including primers and sealers) are made in the USA and are certified to be lead free. It has been illegal in the USA to put lead in paint since 1977, so it would actually be quite difficult for me to obtain “leaded” paint. This potty chair also has a GCC certificate (General Conformity Certificate) available from the manufacturer certifying it is lead free. Despite the fact that the products I use are all certified lead free, the government mandates that I test each of these already-tested components once again. Better safe than sorry, right? You never know when some crazed WAHM will be able to get lead on a street corner & start injecting it into kids’ products.

Get this potty chair while you can, because next August I will be required to “wet” test it (instead of using the “reasonable” method allowed right now). This “wet” test actually destroys the product, resulting in a pile of goo (albeit non-toxic goo). Think I could sell that for $5125? Didn’t think so, so OOAK items will be a thing of the past.

I didn't realize my previous post (about not being a manufacturer) would generate such "rigorous discussion." Despite the opposing comments, I still maintain that I'm not a manufacturer. If I was painting a canvas (as I sometimes do), would that be considered manufacturing? I don't think that artists are generally called manufacturers. The canvas maker & the paint maker are the manufacturers, not the artist, not the person who just assembles their products. So, then what's the difference if I paint on canvas or on a wooden item? Even if the powers that be do consider me a manufacturer (& I'm not convinced of this), I challenge this & I challenge them to evaluate a definition that is unsound. Anyway, enough of this -- some will agree with me & some will not. Even though this is an interesting topic, I think the relevant points are being missed in the details and semantics, so I will digress a bit.

Let's go back to what CPSIA is all about. What is the reason for this new legislation? The reason is that too many children's products have become tainted with lead, something that's unacceptable. Yes, we know that the law as it's written was a knee jerk reaction, that it was poorly defined & that the consequences were not well thought out. This is the battle at this point. So, let's focus on how the lead problem can be best remedied -- not by targeting small business & retailers who have little control over the raw products.

The government probably had it in mind to target those companies who have lost control of their manufacturing processes. Let's face it, some of them have -- otherwise there wouldn't be lead in their products. Does that mean the small guys & handcrafters don't have lead in their products? No, it doesn't -- but the only way lead would end up in their products is if a manufacturer (someone capable of putting lead into products) put it there. Why should a small business making children's clothing be held liable if there is a zipper in her garment tainted with lead? The manufacturer of that zipper needs to be held liable -- they are the one who allowed the lead to be put in there. My guess is that these manufacturers don't actually want lead in their products, but why is the process not being supervised? We should not have to be responsible for others' poor business practices & shortcomings. To do so is "blaming the victim," as we call it in social work jargon.

I think the entire CPSIA needs to be repealed or it will just be "exemptioned to death." While I think exemptions are a step in the right direction, why can't we just go after the culprits & give them some consequences for their actions (or lack of supervisory processes)? Why should I have to be held accountable for their practices??? This guilty until proven innocent way of thinking is unfair & insults the integrity of everyone operating in good faith.

So, I am suggesting that many business out there, especially those assembling items from others who manufacture them, are not the culprits -- because they are not reasonably capable of adding lead to their products. Let's give those manufacturers that have violated the law consequences dire enough to cause them to revamp their processes & to send the message that this is unacceptable...and let's leave Mom, Pop, retailers & manufacturers operating within the law alone!

I am not a manufacturer, but I care about the contents of my products.

I really don't consider myself a manufacturer of children's products & I don't think that many other people would either. What I do is assemble products manufactured by other companies into something new. I buy base products (canvas, furniture, etc.) from certain companies -- & the paints from other companies. I consider myself an artist/artisan/handpainter, but definitely not a manufacturer.

The CPSIA has a very broad scope & as many people can attest to, needs much more clarification -- yet to be provided despite looming legislation to be enacted on February 10th. I've got several choices, none of them good in my eyes. 1) I can keep doing what I'm doing & hope for the best 2) I can close my business or 3) I can provide my own "reasonable testing" so that I can continue to sell my products in good conscience & can provide data to anyone who has questions about the components of my products, many of which have already been tested. Some would say there is a fourth option -- to have my products tested by a third party -- however, this would be too costly, inefficient and would only be a temporary solution. There is more about this in a previous post & how the "wet" testing required by next August actually destroys the items being tested -- so, not an option. I choose #3!

"The commission is aware this legislation impacts everyone the same way -- whether you are a big manufacturer or small. And the commission may, in due time, address the issues of a small manufacturer and how the law applies to them," Vallese said. "

Perfect, this is what I planned to do anyway. To the best of my ability, I will gather data about my product components. I want this information for myself & I want to be able to provide it to my customers should they desire to have it. I have decided to post my progress in installments to document my good faith efforts. In the end, I hope to be able to say in good faith that all of my products are lead free. Of course, the burden of proof should rest on the actual manufacturer, but that is a post for another day. I am still hoping for a small business or OOAK exemption (because then I won't be considered a criminal), but even that at this point will not cease my gathering of component data.

What does this mean for my business? It means that I refuse to shut my doors because of a poorly written law. I have not injected any of my creations with lead of any type and I am not guilty of anything. If, during my research, I unearth a tainted product somewhere, I will post it. That company should be held liable, not me -- I didn't manufacture it. So, Bobs and Bits is still open for business.

Because of looming CPSIA legislation, I've been very distracted lately & have been going through many emotions -- sadness, anger, disgust, disbelief, etc. Most days I feel all of these emotions, sometimes at the same time! Today I'm feeling a little more hopeful based upon the fact that it seems our voices are being heard. I will soon be a criminal

By February 10th, I will be a criminal. The goverment says so -- unless I begin lead testing all of my children's products in a "reasonable manner." What does that mean? I'm not sure. People are twittering about XRF guns which I think cost a cool $3000. There are some folks out there who can do the XRF gun testing for you at $5 an item or $100 hour (approximately 30 items), except that you have to mail your products (& pay shipping) to them to do it. How much will that add to the cost of each item? And what am I supposed to say to someone who orders a one of a kind step stool? Alright, your item is completed. Now I have to send it off for lead testing -- not sure how long that will take, but I'll get it to you when I can. This option may work for some retail stores, but it's not going to work for independent artisans.

Here's the clencher, next August the real drama begins. The "reasonable testing" (XRF guns) will no longer be acceptable. All manufacturers & artisans must have third party "wet" testing -- which actually destroys the item/sample. One of a kind (OOAK) items obviously cannot withstand this level of testing. So I will have to destroy an item for every item I make? I don't think so.

My business is a triple whammy. 1) I make products for children 2) I use paint -- so many colors that it's impossible to test each color and 3) I make mostly one of a kind items. So how am I supposed to survive? I won't -- unless this legislation is changed.

OK, so I'm a criminal. The big question is -- what exactly am I doing that's so wrong???

Now that the Christmas rush is over and I am looking ahead to the New Year, I find myself in a state of uncertainty. Because of the looming new CPSC legislation for lead testing of children's products, I am contemplating the possibility of closing up shop. I say this with much sadness and a lot of anxiety. After several years of trying to figure out how to do something I love (from home), once again I am back to square one -- only this time it is worse because I feel I actually have found my calling. I also find myself stopping the natural flow of ideas in my head (new products, new designs, marketing ideas, etc.) because I am unsure if they will come to fruition. Seems like the brakes have been stepped on, rather abruptly I might add. I know that I am not alone in this and that most other children's products artisans are probably feeling the same way. At this point, it is a waiting game -- to see if any amendments or exemptions are passed that will allow all of us to continue. Anyway, I am feeling the sadness about it all right now. : (

My First Christmas (as a business owner)

It has been a pretty busy holiday season (my first as a business owner), and now I am winding things down in order to celebrate Christmas. I have siblings coming into town that I see about twice a year and want to spend time with them -- and with my new baby nephew whom I have only met once (at his birth). My own son will also be out of pre-school "on holiday" for a few weeks.

I notice that many of my fellow shop owners seem to get loads of stuff done with the kids around. That does not work around my house. Maybe my son is not old enough yet -- or maybe he just has not learned to entertain himself yet. No matter, he is hanging on my skirts whenever he is present. No problem, I am looking forward to it.

Help us amend CPSC legislation!

OK, all of you handmade buyers & sellers, here is a cause to take to heart. As a reaction to the recent safety issues, namely lead content, in children’s products, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission is about to enact new legislation in February 2009. They are requiring all manufacturers of children’s products to undergo lead testing for each of their products utilizing a third party laboratory.

At first glance, this appears to be a positive step – after all, toy manufacturers have lost control over their manufacturing processes – however, makers of handmade children’s products must adhere to the same requirements. Here is an example – me. I buy unfinished products from several different companies (who are required to do their own testing). I then paint the product with paint purchased in the US that adheres to US guidelines. By the way, it’s impossible to buy paint with lead in it in the US anyway. Even if all of the people involved in this chain do their own testing and are in compliance, I must still test each and every one of my products – at $4000 a piece. This is untenable for most small businesses (and unfair), especially when I know that my products do not contain lead.

So, in a nutshell, the only companies that will be able to afford the third party testing will be the major product manufacturers. Ironically, these are the same companies that are the culprits of the lead issues. The majority of handmade artisans and small business will go out of business because of this legislation – unless it is changed!

Here is what you can do. Got to www.handmadetoyalliance.org/how-you-can-help. Here you will find contacts to your Congresspersons and Senators, contact info for the CPSC & even a sample letter you can use to write to these contacts. Email is OK, but letters are better. Please help – we need better safety regulations for our children, but let’s go after the culprits, not the folks who are making toys and products with love and care.

Yay! I've finally rolled out the initial plaques! There are two shapes, two font styles, seven different colors, seven different patterns and seven different ribbons/twines to design whatever your heart desires. Accent colors are infinite.

The bad thing about being a perfectionist is that it takes sooo long for me to accomplish a task to my own approval -- the good thing is that the end result is something I can take pride in. These little plaques are cute, fun and durable too.

You can find them in my Etsy shop and in my new 1000 Markets shop (yes, it has gone live now). I'm revamping my website right now so the new items will have to wait.

1000 Markets Shop Opening!

Surprise, surprise! I have opened another online shop, this time at 1000 Markets. It seems to be similar to Etsy and is an online market for handmade products. I am hoping the competition will be less fierce and that shoppers will be better able to find my items. I do not think my shop has gone "live" yet as it is awaiting approval, but hopefully will be soon.

I was not anticipating opening another shop, but I stumbled across this new market while doing research about how to twitter. While I did not accomplish my intended goal, I found something even more interesting. I will get back to twittering (www.twitter.com) later.

Well, it's official. Bobs and Bits' entry (a handpainted potty chair) into Etsy's Handmade Kids Challenge is a finalist! It was one of about thirty other entries selected by a panel of judges (some high-faluting folks) and can now be voted upon by registered Etsy users. There are seven categories and the potty chair is in the furniture category. From each category, a first, second and third place winner will be chosen. There will also be a prize given to one contestant in each category called Expert Panel Awards of Excellence (selected by the same panel of judges that chose the finalists). The winners will receive some form of Etsy shopping spree and some good press as well. So, check it out and vote for me...voting closes on September 8, 2008 -- one minute before midnight. Bobs and Bits re-opens

The summer hiatus has officially ended, and after five weeks in Ireland and another in Maine, I have returned. The website is up and running and there are a few listings on Etsy. The next few days will be spent unpacking, reorganizing and figuring out what comes next. I plan to begin making some new things, including some new products, and will begin working on them shortly.

Alright, as of yesterday, Bobs and Bits is officially shut down until August 9, 2008. When I return from Ireland, I will begin making some new things, including more potty chairs, step stools, time out stools, toyboxes, vanities, chairs, table and chair sets, peg hooks, wall racks and coat pegs. I'm also trying to come up with some ideas for some "smaller" items too - maybe switch cover plates, jewelry boxes, initial plaques, etc.

I also have plans to begin showing Bobs and Bits items at local arts markets in the fall. Stay tuned...

Another sale! (& a few plugs)

This past week has been a whirlwind of activity. Bobs and Bits had another Etsy sale, so I'm going to take a moment to give them some credit. As I mentioned before, there are loads of talented artists and craftspeople selling their handcrafted items on that site - I have been blown away by it & am proud to have become affiliated with such a great organization. I will be starting an Etsy favorites list soon so that you all can see what I have seen - but feel free to check it out on your own too. Anyway, I got another custom order from an Etsy shopper, so I'm happy about that.

I also had some great news! I submitted a photo of one of Bobs and Bits' handpainted potty chairs for possible inclusion in nola baby magazine's new Gear to Get section and it was accepted for the fall! It's a great publication with lots of resources for new parents & I'm really excited about it!!! The potty chair is such a cute (& useful) item, so I'm happy about the opportunity to feature it in the magazine. It will be available in all twenty of Bobs and Bits' signature designs & in custom designs as well. Nola baby readers will get a 20% discount! I've been working on one to photograph for the magazine before the Ireland trip...lots to do this week.

This is going to be the blog entry where I plug away, so here goes with the rest. I've also decided to become an affiliate for Homestead. I've been so excited about what I've been able to do with with my website design (with no HTML computer experience). I feel empowered by it all -- not only have I been able to design the whole thing on my own, but I'm not dependent upon a computer person to maintain it for me. Be your own webmaster, I say! So, that's why I've got an ad for them on my site (the only one) because I believe in empowering people to do what they can do for themselves. Alright, enough plugging for one day...

My first Etsy sale!

Hoorah! I had my first Etsy sale this week. I'm still very new to all of this but there is not much to lose by opening a "shop" there as well. The Etsy sale ended up being a custom piece for a client who wants to frame a collage she has made for a baby yet to be born. She also wants it to match a bedding set (Dwell Olivia for Target, very cute). I'm almost finished and had fun with this one -- I love doing custom stuff.

It seems like just when I'm getting the ball rolling with Bobs and Bits, I will have to switch gears and put it on hold for awhile. I will be going to Ireland again this summer for six weeks (not that I'm complaining), so the biz will have to be temporarily closed. Hopefully, when I return, I can pick up where I left off...

I've finally got the "bones" of my new business in place and am ready to begin the next chapter. It's been a lot of fun designing my webshop (www.bobsandbits.com). Who would have thought it? I found a web hosting and web building company that I love that has allowed me to accomplish what I set out to do -- thank you Homestead! Honestly, I never thought I'd be able to design such a cool site all by myself, but I did. HTML writer, I'm not, so I was quite intimidated about this process, but I didn't have to deal with that at all. I like being my own webmaster and not having to rely on someone else to update, etc. I also wanted to be able to design the look of the site myself -- I'm quite obsessive about the way things look and about the details (hopefully qualities that will help me successfully run this business).

Bobs and Bits is all legit too, after many harrowing hours trying to figure out which licenses and registrations I need to have. New Orleans does not have many resources in place for assistance with this process. I had registered for a class at a community college but it fell through. I phoned several small business agencies as well, but no one returned my calls (surprise, surprise), so I did this aspect all by myself too! Has anyone been to City Hall in New Orleans? Not a nice place. But, that's behind me now and I'm ready to move on.

In addition to my webshop, I've also got some items for sale on Etsy. This was a new discovery for me, and now that I've found it, I'm addicted! There are so many talented people out there with so many great products and ideas. For those of you not familiar with Etsy, everything there is handmade. The sellers get their own "shop" in which to sell their handcrafted wares. A bit like Ebay for crafters, but it's not an auction. Anyway, it's interesting and I'm hoping it will be more exposure for Bobs and Bits.

OK, let's backtrack a little. Why am I doing this? Because I want to be a WAHM and because I love, love, love painting and designing. Since the birth of my son two years ago, a whole new world has opened up for me. I've found that designing art and furniture for children is a lot of fun and a great creative outlet. I made several things for my own son and other items as gifts for people and thought, "hmmm, maybe I can do this as a job." I've reach a point in my life where I'm ready to really enjoy things (like my job). I also want to spend more time with my son. We will see what this venture holds but I'm committed to sticking with it. I know these things often take time...which brings me to -- marketing (not something I have much experience with). Anyway, my husband, son and I will be traveling this summer to Ireland. Between now and then, my plan is to just keep plugging away at making things.
